21세기는 바이오시대로 불립니다.
지난 20여 년 동안 국내외에서 바이오 분야는 눈부신 발전을 이루어 왔으며, 이는 앞으로 우리 미래의 가장 중요한 첨단 산업 분야로 주목받고 있습니다.
세포배양기술은 오래전부터 의학과 약학을 포함한 기초생명과학 분야에서 사용되어 온 중요한 연구 기술입니다. 이 기술은 바이오의약품(백신, 단백질, 항체, 세포치료제) 생산과 최근 급성장하고 있는 배양육 연구 등에서 큰 사회적 수요가 있음을 보여주며 바이오 분야의 핵심기술로 자리 잡고 있습니다.
이러한 배경에서 2015년부터 영남대학교의 몇몇 교수들이 중심이 되어 지방자치단체(경북도청, 의성군청)와 협력하여 대형 국가 사업을 수주받고, 경북 북부권에 필요한 바이오산업 인프라를 구축하기 위해 노력해 왔습니다. 이 같은 목표 아래 2017년에 영남대학교 세포배양연구소(Yeungnam University Research Institute of Cell Culture; YU-RICC)를 개소하게 되었습니다.
우리 연구소는 다양한 대형 사업의 수주를 위한 과제를 기획하고 수행해 왔으며, 2020년에는 교육부에서 지정하는 ‘대학중점연구소지원사업’에 선정되어 오는 2029년 5월 31일까지 총 9년간 미래 지역 및 국가 차원의 세포배양 사업과 관련된 공동 연구뿐만 아니라, 이를 산업화하고 산업체가 필요로 하는 전문 인력을 양성하여 지역의 발전에 기여할 계획입니다.

The 21st century is often heralded as the era of biotechnology.
Over the past two decades, the biotech sector has experienced remarkable progress globally, establishing itself as one of the most pivotal advanced industries for our future. The biotech sector's growth is fueled by ongoing scientific breakthroughs, collaborative research efforts, and significant investments.
As it continues to evolve, biotechnology holds the potential to tackle persistent global issues, foster economic development, and improve the quality of life worldwide.
Recently, cell culture technology used in medicine, pharmacology, and biopharmaceuticals (vaccines, proteins, antibodies, and cell therapies production) has been extended beyond medical applications to include techniques for boosting livestock output such as cultured meat production meeting substantial societal demands as a proteinaceous food for future.
In this context, since 2015, several professors from Yeungnam University, in collaboration with local government authorities (Gyeongsangbuk-do and Uiseong County), have embarked on securing major national projects to build the necessary biotech infrastructure in the northern region of Gyeongsangbuk-do.
This initiative resulted in the founding of the Yeungnam University Research Institute of Cell Culture (YU-RICC) in 2017.
Since 2020, our institute has secured significant contracts, notably from the Ministry of Education’s ‘University-Focused Research Institute Support Project’ until May 31, 2029. We aim to conduct collaborative cell culture research, industrialize findings, and develop a skilled workforce, fostering regional growth and supporting national initiatives in biotechnology.
